Sounds painful James, wifey eyes the effects of Carling on my waistline all too often and the looks are disapproving, so I have to abstain a tad.
So Braces it is.

So long as I don't lose anything in the cargo hold and the blood can circulate everything will be fine.

Out of interest I did get hold of geunine bone buttons for my overalls from sutlers a new item, bloody great they are.

Take care, Rob

Yes unfortunately for Rach Carling stays waistline or not. The problem with the braces i found was the width of them they end up like ropes cutting into the shoulder. See how they go, good luck.

Picked up a copy of tradition magazine when in France last weekend. They had a detailed spread on 1813 line infantry uniform.
They detailed the braces as two leather straps coming to the front as one and going to the back above each 'cheek', as two. very simple and if seems very much in line with French braces even today as two very seperate pieces of cloth, and not as a Y as with English braces.
Vive les bretelles !

Over the years I've seen many interpretations of Braces in Tradition and Uniformes, often the same author (Michel Petard typically) has come up with different versions of how the braces looked. The only contemporary print I've seen shows a "V" shaped pair of braces, this is featured in a duel.

The section on Uniform has details on the braces.

For anyone interested in a simple but very useful uniform guide to French Infantry i would suggest looking at 'The Handbook of French Infantry 1812-15' by D Rushworth. Cost £3.50 yes £3.50!
telephone number 01484 480867.

I obtained mine at the recent re-enactors fayre and we could do worse to give each new member one on payment of their first subscription.

It includes black and white line drawings for all the main pieces of clothing and equipment together with essential dimensions, and yes one of the drawings even includes french braces.

I can only assume that it has been written with re-enactors of the 1812-15 period in mind.

For Robert, it does show 4 hole buttons!

David
